Service Description

This Easter, children will explore how drawing can form the foundation of painting, inspired by the current exhibition Lucian Freud: Drawing into Painting at the National Portrait Gallery. This two-session workshop is ideal for young artists who enjoy careful looking, expressive mark-making and developing their observational skills. Lucian Freud believed deeply in drawing from life and often made many drawings of people he knew before beginning a painting. His early drawings are considered complete artworks in their own right, built through sensitive line, tonal observation and subtle mark-making. Children will create an artist study of one of Freud’s early drawings, following his own practice of studying artists such as Constable and Velázquez. They will then go on to create their own portrait inspired by Freud’s approach. Using mirrors and guided observation, they will apply what they explored in the artist study to build form, structure and character through sustained drawing. The emphasis throughout is on looking closely, strengthening drawing skills and understanding how painting can grow from a strong drawn foundation. The workshop offers a supportive studio environment for children to develop confidence in portrait drawing. By the end of the two sessions, each participant will have completed a Freud artist study and a drawn portrait, gaining practical experience in observation, structure and expressive mark-making. Knowledge Required Beginner-friendly. What You’ll Get All equipment and materials provided. What to Bring A bottle of water and a small nut-free snack. Old clothes and dress warmly.
