Service Description

Sgraffito Animal Portraits: Inspired by Tim Flach’s Cats & Dogs This Easter, children can explore the bold and tactile technique of sgraffito, creating expressive animal portraits inspired by the photography of Tim Flach, particularly his Cats & Dogs series. Led by Izzy, our head teacher, this two-session workshop is ideal for young artists who enjoy working with texture, strong imagery, and animals. Children will study Tim Flach’s striking animal portraits, looking closely at how he captures personality, expression, and detail in cats and dogs. Using these photographs as inspiration, they’ll layer colour and then scratch back into the surface using sgraffito techniques to reveal lines, textures, and contrasting tones beneath - perfect for suggesting fur, whiskers, and expressive features. This class is designed for children who enjoy hands-on exploration, love animals, and want to develop confidence using layered processes and mark-making techniques. Whether they are beginners or looking to refine their skills, the workshop offers a structured yet imaginative space to translate photographic reference into expressive, textured artwork. By the end of the two sessions, each participant will have created their own sgraffito animal portrait inspired by Tim Flach’s Cats & Dogs, gaining practical experience with a historical technique while learning how contemporary artists use photography as a starting point for creative interpretation. Spaces are limited — early booking is recommended. Knowledge Required Beginner-friendly. What You'll Get All equipment and materials provided. What to Bring A bottle of water and a small nut-free snack. Old clothes and dress warmly. Session Repeats This class series runs over 2 consecutive afternoons.
