Service Description
Historical Art Techniques: Painting with Egg Easter Holiday Two-Session Workshop This Easter, children can step into the world of historical painting techniques in a hands-on workshop exploring the art of egg tempera. Led by Izzy, our head teacher and art historian, this two-session experience will introduce young artists to traditional methods used by painters for centuries. Participants will learn how artists in the past created their own paints using natural pigments, an essential skill before the invention of modern paint in tubes. The workshop will guide them through the process of making their own egg and milk tempera paint, an ancient technique used by Renaissance masters such as Botticelli and Giotto. By mixing pigments with egg yolk, children will discover how artists once worked and gain a deeper understanding of the materials and art historical significance behind masterpieces. Beyond making paint, children will explore traditional painting techniques, learning where the natural pigments come from . How to build layers, on to a gesso ground, create depth, and achieve rich colours using their handmade egg tempera. The workshop will also include insights into the history of this method, examining how it shaped the work of some of the world’s most famous painters. This class is designed for children who enjoy hands-on learning and want to develop a strong foundation in painting. Whether they are beginners or looking to refine their skills, the workshop provides a structured yet creative space to experiment, explore, and expand their artistic abilities. By the end of the two sessions, each participant will have created their own artwork using egg tempera, gaining both practical painting experience and a unique appreciation for historical art techniques.
