Charcoal Self Portrait with Artist Jack Ford | Video

We are very excited for Jack Ford, king of portraiture to teach us how to create a self portrait with charcoal. His portraits are a nod to the masters, yet take on their own beautiful characteristics and charm.

So grab some charcoal, and Jack will take you through the basics of portraiture, breaking the process down, into simple steps for you to follow.

  • Learn about Jack’s practice and where he finds his inspiration

  • What materials he uses

  • Step by step demonstration for you to follow along

  • Finish with an A4 sized self portrait and the knowledge to carry on

Jack is a traditionally trained artist studying first at the Arts University Bournemouth and then moving to Florence to study under internationally renowned painter and teacher Charles H Cecil, where he ended up teaching before returning back to London in 2017. He was selected for Sky’s Portrait Artist of the Year 2020. Painting from life, Jack is keen for the works to be influenced by the ever changing variation of nature, constantly editing designs and re-evaluating whilst painting. Fine out more about him on his website or Instagram.
